2012 Emmy nominations

I still wish there were a Cable ACE awards. HBO and Showtime and AMC play by such different rules that give them such an unfair advantage over the over-the-air networks. Imagine, for example, what Showtime would have been able to do with Smash.

There really needs to be a dramedy category added.

Was excited to see Mayim Bialik be nominated for Big Bang Theory. She was great this season.

Also, give Dame Maggie Smith anything she's nominated for. The woman is flawless.

I would openly root for Sherlock to sweep the miniseries category, but as it barely gets any love from the BAFTAs (except, apparently, in the supporting actor category -- which Martin Freeman, as it has been said, had a lot more to work with and had a much better performance in The Reichenbach Fall than in A Scandal in Belgravia) I'm really not holding out much hope. Maybe the Emmys will surprise me. Wouldn't disparage them awarding Luther and Idris Elba either -- another top show from the BBC.

I think if there's one I feel the strongest about, it's Archie Panjabi for her work on The Good Wife. She's been fabulous in that.

The best thing on a terrific show.

I love The Good Wife. It's probably my favorite show, and that includes Mad Men and Game of Thrones. But I feel like all the love for Kalinda has become a bit much. She good, but her performance this year was not quite as powerful as it was the first two seasons.

Frankly, both Juliana Margulies (I know thats spelled wrong) and Josh Charles had some great subtle moments this year, as did Chris Noth. I'd like to see some of the other great acting recognized instead of just the character.

Interesting. Who would be the "star" of Game of Thrones? I'm not sure you can nominate anyone in any category other than supporting actor/actress, because there is no "main" character.

I'll say this about American Horror Story, the three nominated did fantastic jobs with their roles, but man, was that show a ****-show train wreck by the end. I'm not sticking around for season 2. At least McDermott didn't get nominated. Completely overacted his part in that show.

This, though I may come back for 2. I was hate-watching it by the end, but I had to watch it.

I expected more horror and less crappy acting and grossness.

I agree with this if only because it would be a natural fit for Doctor Who, which I feel, as a whole series, is as good a show as Breaking Bad or Mad Men. I think it should be nominated in the Best Drama Series category, but it's so tough for a sci-fi show to be recognized as more than a niche show. Back when David Tennant was on, he should have been up for best actor each year (and probably won), and Matt Smith probably deserves a nom now for his work.

I don't see it winning any of the major categories, except for maybe Supporting Actress. I like it, but for Best Drama, I'd put it 5th out of 6th, just ahead of Game of Thrones, and that's mostly because I'm really down on season 2 of GoT.

I watch a ton of TV and actually felt pretty pleased with the Academy's choices this year. Obviously some omissions here or there (lack of Community, Parks and Recreation cast > Modern Family cast, etc.) but some surprisingly awesome noms (Giancarlo Esposito and Mark Margolis earned much-deserved nominations).

Actually, I had to Google him. You make a good point about his role. He's not exactly a guest star.

I'm a Community fan, but I'm fine with them not getting a nomination. It's the very definition of a niche show, and its best episodes are incredibly meta, appealing to people obsessed with TV and other media. Parks and Recreation is a more glaring oversight to me, especially no nomination for Ron Swanson.

Another thing that bothers me about the best supporting actor in a comedy series award: The best male character on Modern Family is Nolan Gould's Luke Dunphy. He's the funniest thing the series has going and had a standout season as he took on a bigger role.

They nominated all the adult males and overlooked the best character.

I'm a Doctor Who fan. I really am. And I like Matt Smith. But it's not in the same league as Breaking Bad, especially the last couple seasons.
Doctor Who has doubled and tripled back on its own plotlines so much in the Matt Smith/Stephen Moffett era that it's almost impossible to follow. Wibbley-wobbley, timey-wimey ... whatever. Just give me at least one straightforward time travel plot that doesn't give me a migraine. Matt Smith isn't bad in the role, though Tennant was much better (and I would've rooted for Tennant to get a nomination).

Breaking Bad is just on another level. It's shot better, the plot doesn't bog down (I can't, off the top of my head, think of a single wasted "filler" episode in the series' run), and the acting is better across the board.
There could easily be three and maybe four supporting actor nominations this year and no one would blink an eye. Even the random part-time actors who come in for bit parts knock it out of the park most times. The way the cast regularly conveys a scene without words is incredible. Esposito's big scene in the Season 4 premiere was damned frightening, and Paul told an entire heart-wrenching story -- which also advanced his character arc -- in another episode just by listening to a voicemail in four 30-second scenes. And that's not even touching on what Bryan Cranston has done over the course of about 50 episodes.

I like both shows, and Who certainly deserves props for the way it embraces its 50-year continuity (even if it is confusing at times). But in terms of recent quality it's like going to a Who convention and looking at a 300-pound girl dressed up like Romana standing next to Karen Gillan.

I'm pulling for Fallon this year. Not a thing I thought I'd ever say when his show premiered, but I consistently like his stuff more than any of his contemporaries. A Colbert win would also make me happy. While The Daily Show is still quality I feel like Colbert's been better, and not gotten enough credit for it, the past couple years.
