Nice game out of Howard today. Victorino is picking it up a bit. A good sweep of the Braves is always good for morale.

Today's Nats starting pitcher is appropriately named. They lost to Zito. ZITO.

2/17.

You'll all be eating crow come September. Just watch.

What is the ML record for consecutive wins by a pitcher? Would Zito need to break it to have a chance?

Clemens won 20 in a row in 1998-99.

Rube Marquard should have won 20 in a row in 1912 -- the same year that Walter Johnson and Joe Wood BOTH won 16 consecutive games -- but he wasn't credited with a win, under the scoring rules at the time, for a relief appearance in which he entered with a 3-3 tie in the 8th and the Giants scored a run to take the victory 4-3.

So Marquard is only credited with 19 consecutive victories.

Wow. So Zito probably has no shot whatsoever. If he pitched like he did when he won the Cy Young, maybe, but not now.

If the Giants would just hit for him, he might have a chance (ok, probably not).

But Zito is one of the top two pitchers in lowest run support per game (obviously this was before today's game).

Verlander was first and Zito was second. Both were under two runs per game. Hard for anyone to win any games with that type of run support.

Oh I know. I just remember that run support stat from Friday night and thought it was interesting. I meant to post it Friday night, but forgot to. And now I can't remember the other three pitchers that were on that list (and it's too late to look it up right now)/

So anyone know what Ponson did in Texas to **** that up?

Got drunk in hotel bar and had to be removed (see Rangers.com and the Dallas area papers).
Lost it on the manager and pitching coach when they adjusted rotation and gave him extra day.

See ya, Sid.

And, uh, I don't enjoy this because as I said yesterday I'm in the Braves corner. But where are the pen defenders now?

We've been off planting poison ivy in Roger McDowell's locker ...

Attention spnited, HB and all other fans of te NY Mets ... it's time to back up the truck.

And I agree with LJB, the Phillies are going to run away with the NL East.

By double digits.

Phils
Mets
Marlins
Braves
Nats

Wow, that's a bad division.

Yup... Mets are toast!

The Padres, who blow, took five of six from the Mets and Nats. I'm not about to talk **** about another division.

Who woulda thunk the Central would be the class of the NL anytime soon?

Another day, another botched home-run call by the umpires.

Mark Reynolds just had a home run wrongly taken away in Pittsburgh. A fan in the front row caught the ball, but caught it in such a way that it would have been a home run. The umpires huddled and decided that it was a double. Yet again, a bad decision on a home run.

Note to Doug Mientkiewicz: Don't **** off Randy Johnson. After he stepped out of the box twice, the Big Unit started yelling at him. They soon were nose-to-nose and the dugouts cleared, but nothing much amounted from it.

Updated: Mientkiewicz eventually walks and later scores on a bases-loaded walk. I think that whole confrontation threw Johnson off of his game.

Nobody's even really talking about their bullpen. Durbin, Seanez, Romero, Lidge and Gordon have a collective ERA of 2.06 in 135 innings (just over 30 walks).

If Utley wins MVP, it'll be the first time since the 1961-63 Yankees (Maris, Mantle, Elston Howard) that a team has had back-to-back-to-back MVPs.

I see the Phils winning 95 games, if not more. They're doing all this now with Ryan Howard hitting .214.

And promptly get knocked out in the first round because, well, because they're the Phillies.
