122nd U.S. Open running thread

U.S. Open is always fun. Had a blast three years ago with my dad and brothers at Pebble. Love these old, old, old school places that rarely get to host them.

Played Pinehurst No. 2 years ago on business, with caddies. Their alignment on putts seemed...off. After a few misses on the domed greens my partner and I decided it best to listen to them.

Anyone know why most of Thursday and Friday coverage is on USA and not Golf Channel? Seems odd.

Such a 2022 question.

This is the closest I've come to the Country Club, and I grew up five air miles from there. Us poors can't get close to the place, despite what was said upthread.

if possible, make time to play No. 8. It is just beautiful, far more interesting than No. 2, but I understand the draw there. And definitely make sure you listen to the caddies. You’ll shoot a stroke better per hole.

The only one I've played is No. 4 during the ACC Kickoff event several years ago. All I remember was that it was close to a 6-hour round. We nearly missed out on the damn coach interviews because of it. I love golf. There's nothing more that I hate than playing more than a five-hour round though.

My grandparents lived across the street from a muni in Chestnut Hill, and for years I thought that was The Country Club. Actually, the two courses abut each other, separated by a narrow copse of trees. First swung a wood-shafted club in Poppy's backyard, and I have his office ashtray-putter setup here in my desk.

Even just 40 years ago, in ESPN's infancy, you had really only two options to know what was going on the first two rounds of any major.

1. Be at the course.
2. Stand next to the AP wire.

The explosion of information, thanks to cable, satellite, streaming and the Internet, is astounding to someone like me, who used to sit at the radio station in the evenings and wait for "bats" at the top of each hour to find out how the Tigers were doing. Now, I can wallow in every painful loss, thanks to MLB TV.

(Or as a kid, Don Klein of KCBS Radio would have a quick scoreboard update at 10 minutes after the hour. There was no way in hell Monte Moore gave a damn about giving out-of-town scores on the A's network.)

Hicks keeps saying this is the first Open at the Country Club since 1913. That's a pretty bad error for a network's golf anchor.
