@Cosmo can weigh in, but he wasn't there. But two rules officials .... in the U.S. Open ... made the same ruling. Will defer to them.

J.J.'s putt on 18 will live forever. The tee shot on 17 won the tournament.

Not only that, but how many club members will try to hit that putt if the pin on 18 is in a similar location.

Might take them 50 tries, or more, to duplicate that putt. And with nothing on the line.

I was driving back from St. Augustine today (ugh, that is a ****ing haul) so I only had the sound on from Peacock. Sounded to me like the explanation was that there has to be visible standing water above the surface when a player takes his stance. Or the ball has to be in visible water to get relief from the condition. I'd have to go back and watch the replay of the ruling to see. Just found Kyle Porter's video of the spot where Burns hit from, and it certainly looks like Burns should have been granted relief, though I can't find a video of the entire ruling. I can tell you our Rules officials would have given relief in that spot. We had a similar situation come up in the semifinals of our Amateur last year. The USGA is notoriously hard ass though, especially at the Open.

Screw that, if you can’t hit a decent shot from that lie, you don’t deserve to win the US Open. Bad break, deal with it.

Actually did finally see video of the ruling and I think they got it right. The water has to be visible and pooling when the player takes a normal stance, not when he is digging his feet in, etc. That didn't happen there. Also, Burns finished five freaking shots back. It's not like one shot cost him the tournament.

I just saw the video for the first time of Spaun hitting the flagstick on No. 2. That was a worse break than anything the other leaders encountered

I woke up this morning wondering, "Who won the US Open?" because for the first time in forever, I didn't watch one second of it on TV. Just had too much other stuff going on, it used to be appointment TV for me.

Now that I know, I'm still asking myself, "Who won the US Open?" because I've never heard of the dude. Sounds like a great story though.

Starting to think guys like me are why network TV sports ratings have dropped so much. I used to be a dedicated consumer of the World Series, Stanley Cup, all the golf majors, etc., but now I just don't watch very many live events, period, on TV anymore. I can't be the only one out there.

I said it earlier, but the last three hours of that telecast were borderline surreal, culminated by a "comeback" for the ages.

I didn't know most of who was on the first page, including JJ Spaun, because I'm not watching the Burger King Your Way Open. But I'm glad I watched this.

I do think cord-cutting has a lot to do with a lack of awareness/diminished presence of major events. You watch broadcast TV/cable the networks would blanket their ad space with promos for "big events." US Open, NBA Finals, etc. Now I'm not even aware of the "big movies" coming out because the ads I see streaming are for other things.
