Just an observation from someone who's admittedly on the outside of that Venn looking in.

If someone talked me through it on a simulator, I’d give myself a fighting chance. In real life? I’d panic and my processing directions would severely drop. I imagine most of those guys saying they could think it’s as simple as pushing the nose down and pushing the brakes.

That's the big difference right there. You could try a few times on a simulator until you get it right.
In real life you get one shot and it's a pass/fail test.

I took flight ground school as an elective in college.

To pass I had to promise the instructor that I would under no circumstance ever try and fly a plane of any kind.

I could certainly get the plane on the ground, but likely not in a satisfying way for those who love life.
