If we're talking above the title actors, I'd go with Matt Damon, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep - they can do anything.

Under the radar, I'd throw in Stephen Lang. I see his name in the credits and have to figure out which actor he is because the guy disappears into his characters, Pickett in Gettysburg, the guy who shot Dillinger in Public Enemies, the detective in Bronx is Burning, Freddy Lounds in Manhunter.

Johnny Depp, Will Smith and Meryl Streep.

All know their audiences, slip in enough movies to get their acting chops in while making movies that are big grossers (for those scoffing at Will Smith, the Pursuit of Happyness. The end.)

Johnny Depp is nothing more than the most versatile actor working today.

And Meryl virtually nails every character she tries.

I'll co-sign FOF's list and toss in Kevin Spacey.

Except I think that Hackman is completely retired now. Hasn't been in anything since "Welcome to Mooseport" in 2004.

I can't argue with anyone else on the list. And though he sometimes has trouble picking quality scripts, Edward Norton deserves mention.

And I think Matt Damon is vastly underrated.

Jean-Claude Van Damme
Steven Seagal
Larry The Cable Guy

I thought about going old school with Hackman, Sidney Portier, Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy.
There are a lot of talented guys. My first three, Will Smith, DiCaprio, Denzel Washington are the best. The next four - Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Laurence Fishbourne, - are not slouches. Lot of talent in Tinsel Town.
