Do you have a favorite local artist? We're fortunate to live in a small town area that really supports its small local music scene.

We have our own favorite of our locals, a mid-40s gay woman who is a killer guitarist, drummer, songwriter and absolute incredible singer. Her day job is as a music producer in LA when she's not home. She's tremendous, gives music lessons to kids when she's home, and we go out of our way to see her anytime she's posted to perform around town.

Her schtick here is to play '90s rock in a slow, singer-songwriter way. She does Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Britney, Boy Bands, Third Eye Blind and subverts all of it. She did a killer "Heart Shaped Box" at our wine bar tonight on electric guitar. So good. God, she can sing. I want to introduce my musical theatre daughter to her.

Tonight, she had a middle-age fake blonde ***** out loud that she was mixing too much politics in the music. "Just play," this woman said. Chelsea ripped into a, "Here's my gay set" until they left.

I dropped a $20 into her guitar case when we left. She always plays Patsy Cline for my wife and Springsteen for me. Adore her.

So shout out your local town favorites.

I'm so glad these people exist.

A non-newsroom guy I worked with in the early '90s fronted a great cover band back then. They could sound like anyone, song to song. Whenever I walked in to the bar and the current song finished, he would yell "[Slacker]'s here!" and then they would launch right into "Hey Jealousy" because I love that song, then and now. ... Best of times, they were.

Decades ago "The Lamont Cranston Band" was huge in MSP and the upper Midwest. They regularly played in a club my North Nowhere city for a weekend. They were the house band at The Cabooze in MSP, I sort of considered them our local artist. Never could break through to the big time. I think they are still playing gigs.

There were several excellent, regional bands who regularly played Bismarck-Mandan clubs. The Newz, Nightlife, the Mary Jane Alm Band ... I sometimes wonder how long they stuck with it before getting "real" jobs.

Growing up, "Wilmer and the Dukes" were iconic in Central and Western New York. College gigs, small clubs, etc. One story holds they were the inspiration for Otis Day and the Knights, because one of the Animal House writers went to Hobart or St. Lawrence or someplace WATD played regularly.
