Just finished our 40-page broadsheet high school football section (covering 12 schools).

By my count, spent 51 hours on it, all in the last 3 nights.

I need a drink... or five.

Thanks for listening to be whine like a little *****.

Jeremy: I'm thinking Diet Coke will have to do.

INT: Hang in there... there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The football section? Oh, do you mean that thing I immediately tossed into the recycling bin with the classfieds? Kept you a little busy? Oh. Huh.

(sorry, I'm a mean old *******.)

40 pages for 12 schools? Holy crap. That's insane.

Agree. Unless you've got 20 pages of ads, I'd cut that back by about 34 pages for next year.

Spnited and Ace: Agree, though THIS year, the ad department actually went out and sold ads, rather than simply accepted what was offered.

That's what happens when you get a new guy bucking for the ad director's chair to get the job of the former ad director, who was asscanned last month.

They more than doubled the ad inches from last year.

Joe: You nailed it, I'm afraid.

So how many pages of ads were in the section?

Ace: They sold ads for each school, then some general ones, too.

There's a strip ad on the cover, the back page is a full-page ad and of the other 38 pages, 35 of them have at least two ads on them.

Still WAY too much for only 12 schools. We increased from 36 to 44 last year with 65 schools in our area.

We're a state-wide paper and the section I just finished was eight open pages. And it was more than enough. Most readers won't have the patience to read a 36-page prep preview section; all that info likely will go to waste.

My only response to that is: They will read it in Texas. We have a 24-page section for about 30 high schools and our readers eat it up.

People in Texas read? :D

I see your point, though. I guess it depends where you are.

32 pages here... and they scheduled a system upgrade the same weekend I was paginating. That was very convenient.

Ours will probably be 48 or 56, including high school and college stuff. We finish it up next weekend. And I can't help but have the feeling that our staff uses it more for reference (for rosters, schedules and such) than most people out in the world will ever read it.
Johnny Tailback probably looks at his school's write-up, finishes taking a dump in the fieldhouse bathroom, then leaves the tab on the floor for the next person. Makes me feel like kind of a dirty *****, really.

I'd like to add to the discussion here, but we still haven't received the pages from Ad yet, so I still have no idea how pages it will be We are shooting for 20. The thing comes out Sunday.

Oh yeah, and I will be chasing down high school coaches for the next couple of days because, apparently, they can't operate a modern telephone.

We just wrapped our 40-page tabloid-size high school section Sunday (covering 42 schools) ... Advertising was at an all-time low, which meant this formerly 56-page bad boy is slimmer than its 48-page college cousin (which we finished absurdly early, the middle of last week, due to print schedule issues). They publish Friday and Sunday.

Whew. I celebrated with 18 sweat-dripped holes today -- and broke 90 for the first time in ages. My game, with a new kid, sucks the mighty suck.

We're doing final edits on ours tonight and tomorrow.

45 schools, 40 pages

Up from 34 pages last year, I think

Exact same thing happened to us last year. Moved to a completely new filing system and "upgraded" to Quark 6.5. All this a week or two before I got the pages for the section.

That thing was a ...
