Washington Street in Winchester is arguably one of the most beautiful streets in the country. It's like something out of a movie: massive stone houses with white picket fences, well manicured lawns, rows of trees on both sides of the road.

Then you cross the train tracks and head down Kent Street, and the scenery, to put it mildly, changes quite drastically. I hear the Haitians are not to be F'ed with down there. Folks at Strasburg HS known that for sure.

For what it's worth Part I...
I worked in Winchester for a good three years after school. The city/town is a pure slice of heaven compared to my current city (which ain't as bad as some folks make it out to be, either). Winchester is beautiful country -- often made me wish the Star was my destination paper. Anyway, ask me anything over PM if you want. I still consider several people there good friends, so I do have good things to say. That said, I won't feed you BS, either.

For what it's worth Part II ...
This probably means more to the people in here ... I drank beer with SportsJournalists.com celeb Ryan Sonner in Winchester on several occasions. I guess that makes me SportsJournalists.com celeb by association, even if I've only posted twice.

I remember the Shenandoah Valley Herald used to have a reporter who would collect autographs. Not only would he ask the people he was interviewing for an autograph but he readily admitted that he basically trampled anyone who got in his way when an assignment to interview a famous person presented itself.

So when the Oak Ridge boys were playing the Shenandoah County Fair or Art Donovan was a celebrity at the Apple Blossom Festival, he was going to be there dammit.

I wouldn't doubt if he's still there. If so Kellie Pickler better watch out.

The key is to hang by the beer tent nearest the exit and people that are leaving will hand you their tickets. Free beer = my kind of party.

The only problem about hanging around the exit is that you're closest to the inevitable redneck fights that break out. One year I saw I guy smash one of the custom glasses on a toothless dude's head. Good times all around.

I strung (stringed??) a story for that paper a long time ago when one of their teams came to my town. Come to think of it, I never got my check.

Any of you guys ever party at Gable's just across the line in W.Va.? It was pathetic but it was the only club around outside of DC. We would barhop in Winchester and then if things were still going good make the trip to Gable's at about midnight ... interesting times, interesting times.
