Do you enjoy roving sidelines in search of stories? The Fredericksburg Free Press, a nonprofit newsroom serving five Virginia localities, is seeking a part-time sports writer to cover high-school sports, the Single-A Fredericksburg Nationals, and University of Mary Washington athletics beginning in August.

This hire will be the point person on a new weekly sports newsletter that lands in the inbox of our 14,000-plus subscribers. Knowledge of Xs and Os is both important and necessary, but the right candidate will produce stories and content that non-rabid sports fans can enjoy.

Pay starts at $2,000 per month for an expectation of 10-12 stories, including game coverage, features and short-form video. The gig starts in August, but freelance opportunities may be available in the run-up to launching the newsletter.

Please email Editor-in-Chief Joey LoMonaco at [email protected] with three clips and a resume. Please CC [email protected].

With all due respect, and apologies for being "that guy," but this sounds like some pretty significant responsibilities, with the newsletter, Single-A baseball and college sports beat responsibilities (even if it is just chipping in on the beat) for a part-timer.

I'm assuming no benefits, since it's a part-time role. Any worries about getting quality applicants for a part-time job with such significant responsibilities for $24k a year to start and no benefits? And was there any discussion about adding a full-time role for it?

That's borderline slavery.

I'm assuming that 10-12 stories is per week, not per month.

On top of writing a newsletter. And trying to keep about 20 high schools and a small college straight.

What a slap in the face to everyone in the profession. If you can't cover sports properly, don't cover them at all.

Edit: Read that VA just enacted a law mandating salary ranges in job postings. At least they’re following it.

To clarify, it's 2-3 stories per week, or 10-12 stories per month.
