What would you do?

Got a friend of mine who has a job offer in another state where he clearly doesn't want to go. The money is fair and the position is in his field. He's unemployed right now and believes that something could break after the new year. Should he take the chance and go somewhere he doesn't want to go, or take a gamble on 2007 being better?

From what I understand, the offer is from a place in Mississippi. He doesn't want to go there. The money would be fine, and this, not to take offense to anyone, would be a far cry from where he is now in northern New Jersey. I think the reasons are valid.

From what I understand, the offer is from a place in Mississippi. He doesn't want to go there. The money would be fine, and this, not to take offense to anyone, would be a far cry from where he is now in northern New Jersey. I think the reasons are valid.

The cost of living difference between northern NJ and Mississippi is huge. His dollars would go twice as far down there.

I don't see why he'd rather be unemployed in New Jersey rather than working in Mississippi. Unless he believes the stereotypes of the South.

I'd go to Mississippi. A buddy taught 1st grade in Mound Bayou, which, back then, was one of the poorest parishes in the nation. I'd love to work in Mississippi, anywere in Mississippi.

Working beats this hell out of unemployment. And I lived in Mississippi for five years. It's not bad there. There are good people in the state. Those stereotypes of the South are mostly full of ****.

Tell him to deal with it and take the job. There are hundreds of journalists out of work. Tell him to stay there a year or two and move on from there. Waiting and hoping for something better is, IMO, dumb. Unless he has money to fall back upon, or parents to pay for everything.

I told him just that but he's wavering and I can see why. It is a big decision.

If he's so focused on the numbers on his paycheck (instead of his quality of life) then he'll never be happy.

No-brainer from my perspective. ****, I'd rather be in Mississippi than in New Jersey under damn near any circumstances.

He might not be able to get out of the government cheese line if he decides unemployment beats leaving your ex.
