Speaking of Hall of Fame arguments, I was thinking that Bill Parcells will become the first HOF coach in the face mask era who never coached a HOF qb, but there are two others. Any guesses?

Nope.. Madden coached HOF'er George Blanda.
After looking at the list of HOF coaches, my guess is George Allen.

If you consider Al Davis a coach (which is part of his enshrinement classification), he never coached a HOF QB in his three years. But I don't know if the question is based on that sneakiness.

It would have taken me forever to reach Gillman. The fact he never had a HOF QB is really a testament to his offensive genius.

It looks like Gillman coached Norm Van Brocklin -- not for long, but they did reach a title game together.

Incidentally, looking up Van Brocklin on Wikipedia yielded a tremendous quote that I had never seen. He had surgery to remove a brain tumor in the '80s, after which he said, "It was a brain transplant. They gave me a sportswriter's brain, to make sure I got one that hadn't been used."

I was actually half-expecting someone on here to argue against him.

I know one player can only do so much, but in the case of a quarterback, I don't know if I could ever give a HOF vote to a QB that never led his team to at least a Super Bowl appearance.

Interesting question...will a Super Bowl appearance be a "requirement" for a qb going forward? A championship has been a defacto marker in the past with some exceptions.

I know Fouts and Moon never appeared in one. Sonny Jurgensen's skins got to the Super Bowl, but Kilmer started. Before him, Y.A. Tittle never won a championship though he did go to a few with the Gia

I'm sure there are/will be some exceptions to this (Fouts was one that came to mind). The only current QB that made me pause with this one (and I realize it's a little early to discuss HOF) is Rivers since I see that window in San Diego closing real soon thanks to the utter incompetence of Turner and A.J. Smith.

People don't argue the best of the best. He's not just a HOF player, he's an inner circle guy. It's like someone arguing Brett Favre. He got one title, won multiple MVP's but wasn't perfect and hung on a few years after he was great.
