Portland Press Herald and related companies at it again, including a gutting of the online division. I thought that was the wave of the future?

Hopefully posts like this are fewer and farther between in 2010. Have at it.

What most print outlets are discovering about online is that those people are content processors, not gatherers. So when push comes to shove, they got shoved first. In our shop, the online posting is falling to the (few) remaining copy editors. Because we have so much free time. ::)

True dat. Everyone SAYS they want a great website, but very few want to commit the resources to making it happen.

Newspaper managers eventually are going to have to understand that operating a website is a full-time job, not simply asking the copy desk editors to upload a handful of stories at midnight, after working a full day.

I wonder which basement this blogger works out of ...

Contrary to the item I posted yesterday, the MaineToday Media Web site did not bear the brunt of the extensive layoffs in the latest round of cutbacks at the company that owns the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel.
