I have a question about time. A guy who served and was hiring for a small business said he questioned guys who served around 15 years because why didn't they just put in a few more years to retire.

Some people are just done with it and don't want to put up with it anymore. Some might've gotten in trouble and forced to get out. Some might've gotten passed over for promotion.

The companies that make the instruments for the Navy may just want to pick your brain to figure out how to make them better. Or at least sign you on for training their staff for installation and implementation.

That’s why I couldn’t help but laugh a few years ago when USA Today thought it had the story of the century when they wrote an article about “ZOMG retired generals make money as defense consultants!”

They have expertise and insight that only a few hundred people on Earth have.

My brother served on nuclear subs for nearly 8 years. He found there wasn't much demand for "missile launchers" in the private sector. He got a job as a lettercarrier.

A friend's in-laws had been technicians on nuke sub reactors, moved on to civilian power plants. At a party he urged me to talk with them. I did, and told him they both seemed...odd. "All the nuke sub guys are like that," he said. Years later I was in a meeting with a corportate comms guy from Maersk, the shipping line. I got a weird vibe and asked him if he had served on a nuke sub.

"Yes, I did. How did you know?" he said.

My niece's boyfriend is a Marine. He just put on Major after either 8 or 9 years. He's a sharp dude and deserved it.

As a squid, I never ate them.
I do have a friend who is a Marine (no such thing as a former one), who has a tattoo of a box of crayons with some of them chewed.
You can be offended by the insults or embrace them.
