There have been a lot of talented national writers hired by The Athletic, but what local writer hires have you been impressed with?

My faves: Marc Carig (Yankees), Jon Krawczynski (Timberwolves), James Edwards (Pistons), Eric Koreen (Raptors). I also like that kid Julian McWilliams they hired to cover the A's. Brings a different perspective from most beat writers since he used to be a semi-pro player internationally.

Krawczynski was the top reason I subscribed. Always know I can count on top-notch writing from him.

Though, I do miss throwing his timely AP copy on my pages....

Me. But that's strictly a personal choice!

They've made some quality hires. I don't know all of them of course, but of the people I do know, none has made me raise my eyebrows and go what? The stable is impressive, with one notable exception (I'm poking fun at myself in case you're wondering who I mean)

Hi! They hired me as a senior editor and one of my tasks is to help them build and implement a universal desk. As they told me from the start of our discussions, they did it the opposite way most outlets do - hiring writers first. Now they're adding desk folks. One of my SI colleagues left the same day I did to go to The Athletic.

Not going to say much more, I didn't comment on SI stuff when I was there. But these folks DO have a plan and I like everything I hear.

It’s a helluva lot easier — perhaps smarter — to nab the “content creators” first, especially if you’re relying on their name recognition to pull in subscribers.

First, congrats on your new job! It's awesome.

If / when, you can in the future, I hope you feel comfortable adding what you can on here. Not just from a good journalism standpoint, which most people on here are concerned with (they seem to be feasting on where the industry is right now to hire some very talented writers and editors). ... but also in a way that pieces together how they plan to monetize the capital they have been able to raise (and may continue to raise?). ... and if things are working out along the way in terms of what they projected during those capital raises (in terms of growth and income generation).

Thrilled for you, Moddy. And as a subscriber, I'm thrilled. Hope there's a bunch more editors in the hiring pipeline behind you; heaven knows there are a lot of good ones out there that could use a gig.

I’m glad they are starting to make inroads on having “copy editors”. That was one of my bigger concerns when they launched. I go back and forth on whether or not they should have went after writers without copy editors first but at least maybe it feels like they’re starting to go down that road and that potentially could be just as big for the product as the product itself seems to be becoming.

We work remotely so she's in heaven. And my full-time executive assistant.

I know I've spent a lot less time on the KC Star site after The Athletic hired Rustin Dodd.
