I get the artist's motivation behind this (and it looks like does a pretty good job photoshopping it).

I visited the 9/11 Memorial a couple weeks ago for the first time and found it distasteful to see people taking smiling, goofy selfies in front of it. Most of them were foreign tourists or teenagers who likely are too young to remember it, but nonetheless it was off-putting.

I saw a man who appeared to be a firefighter (based on his tattoos and t-shirt) who was taking a moment of emotional and silent reflection. His wife was standing at a distance filming him. I'm guessing he's a survivor who was visiting the memorial for the first time. Behind him were two girls throwing up peace signs and sticking out their tongues for a selfie. I tried to get a photo capturing the scene, because the juxtaposition was so striking, but the firefighter moved off to go hug his wife before I could get my gear ready.

As I age, I expect the worst of people. Including politicians at all levels, down to dogcatcher.

(And, yeah, before anyone suggests it, I suppose I should look in the mirror more often. But I don't do stupid **** at any historical sites.)

Between this and the video a couple of years ago of the people on the beach who posed holding a baby dolphin and then set it down in the dirt to die I'm convinced Earth's greatest day will be the one when humans are extinct.

I find it beautiful and poignant when very young children are at memorials such as this and are acting like children. It acts as a reminder that life moves on even after horrific events. Adults and teenagers? Not so much.
