I'd like to personally thank the federal government for not shutting down the water fountains at the local National Park. I run past there every day and like being able to hydrate on the tax payers' dime.

Now you've done it. The NSA is monitoring this site and knows who you are. You'll be under arrest by this afternoon.

As usual, they take care of their own. But the folks who work for contractors, and private businesses with government contracts will get screwed.

Not true.

When the shutdown ends, those private businesses who have signed government contracts will be paid in full, as will contractos with government contracts, once the jobs they have contracted for have been completed.

And yes, in the meantime some of the average Joes both parties purport to care about will be hurt. Did a certain minority of Congress really think they could shut down the government without hurting someone?

Well, it's also titled "Affordable" while driving rates sky-high.

Not sure how other companies are doing their pricing, but at my shop the premium for me+spouse is almost four times as much as it would be if I was just insuring myself.

How does that make any sense? Shouldn't two people cost, you know, twice as much as one?

For what 3 months till the next fiscal cliff. Nothing to celebrate, nothing to even pay
attention too I guess unless you are a Federal employee.

To the average American this shutdown pretty much had zero impact other
than having to hear about it.

Throughout, The New York Post barely gave it coverage which I think was
the right place to be.

One thing it showed is how many people, at the state employee level, are actually paid for by the federal government.

Many of the research positions get federal funding. Lots of other university employees get federal funding. On the city level you got cops, firefighters, and even parks and recreation people are paid for by federal grants.

If this event was actually going to trigger an actual conversation about the reach of the federal government, then it might be different but it hasn't yet and it isn't likely to.

Next time around I doubt John Boehner takes marching orders from Ted Cruz. What a disaster for the GOP. But as usual for them, this too shall pass.

Well the narrative says it was a disaster but time will tell. Do think it was something that
Obama welcomed to take the spotlight off health care rollout.

It bought time but now healthcare is in spotlight and it does not look pretty.
