The Secrets of Playboy

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

I have watched the first three episodes, there have been a lot of articles and books that draw the curtain back on life in the Playboy world but this series takes it to another level with stories that i had never heard told by people who had never spoken about them.

I read Holly Madison's book and thought the same thing reading that as I did watching her episode (and she touched on it briefly and one of Hef's sympathizers said the same thing): What was stopping you from walking out the door and getting on with your life anytime you wanted?

In other news, I didn't recognize Sondra Theodore.

She looks like she has been through a LOT
Big time, I remember here as one of the Playmates on the Playboy pinball machine, a staple of the mall arcade.

I wonder if we will see and hear from Kimberly Conrad or Carrie Leigh who was the subject of a pissy Hef hit job in the mag after they split. (Yes, as a longtime subscriber, I did read the articles lol.)

Very true, the Hef bio Mr. Playboy was really good but I don't recall reading much of this stuff. same for the Hef doc Playboy, Activist, Rebel.

The peeks behind the curtain started after the success of The Girls Next Door and suddenly Hef, notoriously reclusive, was everywhere with his girlfriends and it looked kind of sketchy but this series takes it to a while other level.

Grooming and conditioning are a hell of a thing. I'd also add that the general public's reaction to people who have been involved in the industry is not great either, if someone is trying to move on from it.

In the same vein, is anyone else watching "We Need to Talk About Cosby" on Showtime? It shows what a cultural icon he was on camera and creep off. It's had a number of victims sharing stories that follow the same pattern of being drugged and assaulted.

One thing I didn't know: until a few years before he died Hef didn't own the Mansion, it was owned by Playboy Enterprises, for many years a public company, and he paid a big buck every month as the tenant. Probably to protect him against liability if somebody OD'd or some other bad **** happened there (which apparently was the case).

Playboy Inc. used to battle with the IRS about the mansion. The company would write of all the expenses as business expenses and Hefner would get all the benefits of living there tax-free.

Didn't Playboy rent out the mansion for parties? They weren't Playboy Parties, but just some company hiring Hef and the Bunnies to act a part.

Like Mar A Lago for the hideous. MAL is the Playboy mansion for the hideously ugly , the bloated and plastic surgery failures.

When I first started looking at Playboy in the 70's it was a huge magazine, with perhaps 200 pages. They would run three pictorials every issue. I always wondered how much more expensive to run a second playmate a month instead of another piece of really bad fiction. Are pages of photography that much more expensive to run?

When I was just out of law school I subscribed to Playboy for kicks since I lived alone; but one day it was hanging out of my mailbox at apt mailboxes and I was too embarrassed and cancelled.
