Calgary Conservatives are closing ranks and defending their party after Arthur Kent -- the high-profile Tory candidate in Calgary-Currie -- complained publicly about his dealings with leader Ed Stelmach's inner circle.

On Monday, PC party candidates praised the Stelmach team's work in Calgary, while an unrepentant Kent repeated many of his earlier jabs.

"I told it like it is," Kent said Monday.

"I support Premier Stelmach entirely. That's why I was mystified as to why his team were conducting such amateurish, one-way communications last week. I look forward to them growing up and reopening two-way communication."

Ran in Toronto as a Conservative in the '06 federal election. Got soundly beat by the Liberal incumbent.

Senior campaign strategists in Alberta cannot recall a worse case of a shooting-star candidate, someone so self-absorbed that Kent has actually mocked the party for failing to treat him with a desired level of reverence.

"I've never seen anyone who is so utterly in love with themselves," confided a veteran of half a dozen elections, whose sage advice was rejected by Kent as coming from "Jurassic Park."

Insiders gleefully describe how all of Kent's brochures blew off a pickup on the Deerfoot Trail, tying up traffic while workers scurried between cars retrieving thousands of pamphlets wind-whipped into a paper blizzard.

Last week, he unleashed a tirade against the Conservative campaign when Premier Ed Stelmach cancelled an appearance at a Kent fundraiser. Perhaps Stelmach got wind of Kent's planned speech topic -- Afghanistan. Only vigorous arm-twisting by his campaign team, who pointed out the Taliban insurgency wasn't exactly a provincial election issue, convinced Kent to refocus on constituency concerns.

Even so, Kent was severely miffed, despite having two cabinet ministers sent in as Stelmach substitutes. "They want nothing but my name, sadly," he lamented to the Calgary Herald.

This and other off-script comments have put campaign morale into a tailspin and complicated volunteer recruitment. E-mails exist which include a threat by Kent to sue his own constituency association for "unwelcome intrusions" in events where he was the star attraction.

Campaign manager Bruce Thorpe finally warned Kent that half his team was ready to quit if the candidate didn't start behaving. "Not yet" is Thorpe's answer to my question on whether anybody has actually resigned.
