The Oscars

I'm not OK with Camilla winning an Oscar before Princess Margaret.

Seriously, though, I know Vanessa Kirby is nominated for something else but her two seasons on The Crown were ethereal, and I read the synopsis of the film that she was actually nominated for and it sounds scary and sad.

I had no idea that actress was also a writer/director. Very cool. Vanessa Kirby has all the elements to be a huge star.

Worst Oscars broadcast of my lifetime.
I'm oddly on the opposite end of the spectrum here, haha - It feels like we're dropping in at a fancy dinner party. I doubt I'd like this format every year, but a low-key Oscars feels nice, maybe especially since the past year of movies has been low-key because of the pandemic.

So are first run movies going to appear on Netflix and Amazon from now on or will people go back to theaters?
Can corporations make enough $$$ if theaters are a thing of the past?

I would rather hear whatever those who are very good at making movies has to say than to watch some poor host try to be cute or funny.

What the hell ending was that?

1. Best Picture not last

2. Frances McDormand keeps it under a minute (though to be fair, she did do the wolf thing right before that)

3. They give the award to an old white guy who didn't show up when everyone was expecting them to give it to a guy who was literally dying when he gave that performance.

Weird telecast. Weird order. Ending on the shocking Hopkins win when he wasn't in attendance, so there wasn't even a speech.

Just kinda bizarre all around.

Someone earlier commented on what the WWE Oscars would be like and that was on the nose: Just when you thought there was diversity and they're gonna give the belt to the face as a tribute, the winner is ... an old white guy! They then hit everyone with steel chairs and cut to black.

OK, wasn't watching...

But the producers had to be assuming that Chadwick Boseman would win, right? They wanted the big emotional ending and it bit them in the ass.

Seems to be the consensus. I saw a tweet that some voters don't like posthumous awards. Seems like a massive upset.

Ann Hornaday of the WaPo was on the Kornheiser podcast on Friday to preview the Oscars. She thought that Hopkins should win and was trying to be polite in getting across the Boseman’s performance was not among the best last year.

For a show that presumably is supposed to celebrate movies, there was very little celebrating and very little movies. There weren’t nearly enough clips or anything to make people who hadn’t seen the movies want to see the movies. I suspect the nominees for best cinematography, production design, costumes and hair and makeup might have preferred that their work was shown and not a pan of all them in the audience.
