I feel like Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer on there. When I first signed up, I've got friend requests coming at me from all angles. How in the hell did Facebook know I knew these people without putting any info in other than my e-mail? It wasn't even my regular e-mail either, yet it knew all.

It's a whole new world. My sense of shock, awe and total bewilderment at this site is not unlike what I think Queen Victoria might feel like if she was re-animated and taken to a modern city, where she saw a penis cake in an adult bakery.

I wrote that on my Facebook page and some longtime friends who hadn't been in touch for a while were surprised I'd make a penis reference like that just as a matter of course. Ruh-oh. Looks like I'd better tone down the SJ on my Facebook.

Your next act should be to post a link to the MLB clip of your home run fail. :)

Just spent an hour catching up on the thing - had Facebook friend requests from all sorts of folks who I'd been out of touch with - thing is, I feel like a bad "friend" for not keeping up on the thing, and it's even worse posting something and getting seven or eight or 12 e-mails from people. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm friends with some of the people on my list.

I have a bunch of friends who haven't joined and have no interest for a variety of reasons -- not wanting women they know keeping tabs on them through it, is reason number one. It also may be an age thing. I don't feel old, but I am suddenly in that 40ish age range.

A guy I work with will go on Facebook when hell freezes over, thaws out, then freezes over again. And then the Nationals will have to win the World Series (sorry Moddy!)

I am on but haven't updated in like four months. My kids at the high school keep adding me as a friend. After repeated attempts on explaining why its a bad idea for me to be their "friend" I gave up. Meantime, I keep getting friend requests from all type of people I forgot I even knew.

Fixed.

I get friend requests from people I went to high school with. Got one today from a childhood friend.

But I'm really not interested in chatting with them. And apparently they are not really interested in chatting with me.

They request to be a friend. I accept. Then we go on ignoring each other as we had been doing before.

So is the purpose of this silly thing really just to amass as many "friends" as you can?

I just don't get it.

It loses its luster after a while and the updates and emails will slow to a crawl. I've been on 4 months.

On the good side, I've at least touched base with several folks from high school and college I hadn't heard from in many, many years and it's fun to see what they look like now and what they're doing. But after that it's back to forgetting about each other mainly.

Bubbler,

Facebook uses hyper targeting software to find people that you may know.

For example if you added three friends, and those three friends appeared on two other users's friends list, it would suggest you as a friend. It will also suggest friends that may work in the same company, graduated from the same school, etc.

It can also import your e-mail addresses to help you figure out which friends are on Facebook.

It also knows what you had for breakfast and what kind of toothpaste you use.

I've been on 6 months, and have 9 friends (2 of them siblings).

Of the 7 non-relative friends, most are friends from grade school or high school.

I've found one has become a militant Palin/Cheney right-wing screamer, who has now set me up for all kinds of loony wing-nut news feeds, which he apparently believes I'd appreciate.

And another has become a militant gay guy, making snotty remarks about "breeders." From his chat conversation, I gather he thinks I'm gay too (not exactly sure how he got this impression).

Haven't seen or talked to either of them in 30 years, so I haven't been inclined to straighten either of them out.

I think I'm going to find out your real identity, add you and send wing-nut news feeds to you just to see a your reaction.

Unless you're committed to keeping it updated, I wouldn't even bother with it.

If you ignore your page, it can be interpreted that you are ignoring your "friends"

It's a giant pain in the ass
