The Strokes' "Is This It" is/was a masterful album, maybe the best album of the 2000s. Punkish but relatable. Everyone should listen to it at least once.

Alabama Shakes — No album yet, but they do have a 4-song EP and several videos on YouTube. Hands down one of the best new bands.

Oh, DBT will definitely be a huge part of the foundation. Probably the biggest part. I had put together my top 20 on a band message board months ago. I need to dig that up and start there.

If you dig DBT, archive.org has a pretty good selection of their live shows, as well as several other artists that can be downloaded and put into your iTunes.

But, as for recommendations now that I know you like DBT, I would check out:
