JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Ambitious Sports Reporter/Producer
Company: The News Leader
Position:
Ambitious Sports Reporter/Producer
Location:
Staunton, Virginia
Job Status: Full-time
Salary: Not Specified
Website: http://www.newsleader.com
Description:
Ambitious Sports Reporter/Producer
Are you a talented sports journalist who wants to tackle more ambitious projects and spread your wings beyond print, while still telling daily stories on all platforms in a digital-first newsroom?
We’re looking for a strong writer who can do more than game stories. We want an energetic storyteller who can join us in leveraging social media, video, longform and podcasts to cover our sports and outdoors scene in new ways. And your connection with viewers would also follow through from content crafting to publishing – this role is a hybrid that includes some sports producer duties, grounding you in a technically savvy newsroom using modern journalism tools.
We cover the people, passions and issues of local sports in a way that interests every reader, not just those with youngsters on a team. It goes beyond sports where scores are kept, extending to the mountain trails, streams, fields and scenic byways of our market.
You would work a broad and flexible beat to find interesting people doing interesting things, the dramas of life and competition and people trying to be their best by doing their best in their recreational pursuits. And you’d tell those stories with compelling writing, and the experience or potential to do engaging video (we offer good training) as part of the beat.
On the producer side, you’d join an existing sports reporter/producer in making sure that clean sports content quickly gets posted to digital platforms and makes its way to our page designers and print publication editors. Core editing and content handling skills will be important, as well as organization.
We’ve been recognized as Gannett’s top small newspaper recently, winning the 2014 Best of Gannett award in our division. We've already retooled with new print and digital content systems, debuted a new website and have transitioned to a paid subscription model. Now we're moving ahead as we grow readership and develop further into a 21st century news operation.
This is a great job for you if you’d like to grow as a writer and storyteller and be part of the company that boasts the nation’s largest roster of journalists — Gannett.
Our market itself is beautiful. Look east and you see the Blue Ridge. Look west and you see the Alleghenies. Between, it's rolling hills, quaint cities and great places to live. Camping, fishing and hunting abound. Fully a third of our county is national forest or national park, but we also enjoy a historic Staunton downtown that draws tourists. We're minutes away from major universities.
Interested? Send your resume, a summary of your thoughts on the job and work samples to David Fritz at [email protected]. Please include “Sports” in the subject line. We are a Gannett organization and we value diversity.
