So, I probably should have posted this at the beginning of August, but the Oelwein Daily Register, a six-day daily/one-day e-edition, is looking for a sports reporter. I'm leaving it, well, by Aug 28.
Basic info: Six days a week (Tuesday through Saturday), with an e-edition on Monday.
It has a circulation under 2K (that I know of), which - yes, you say 'Why is it six days a week?' I can't answer that in confidence, because at times that mystifies me.
The daily deadline is 5 p.m. to get the paper to press, which means it is somewhat of a split shift atmosphere unless you want to put in a "normal" 4-whatever shift during game nights.
Coverage of 3-4 high schools, up to five if you want to extend to another community. Part of CMG newspapers' Iowa branch of papers, you'll work with a couple really good, old-school (old in age, kinda, too).
They'll expect you to do photos and writing, and design if you want to.
Games are Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 90 percent of the time, depending on the sport and schedule.
There is a camera in-house that will be yours, so if you don't have equipment, it's provided. A decent Canon EOS 90D with a Tamron 70-300 lens and its 18-135 lens.

Pay is ... I don't what they'll start at. As I leave, I'm at a yearly salary that's $40K, but I also have a couple other responsibilities with one of the twice-weeklies. (Part of why I'm leaving).
The main school, Oelwein, is good at girls golf and cross-country. Boys XC and girls golf won state in the same academic year, but they are the school's fifth and sixth state championships in school history and first since girls bowling in 2010. Everything else is "football is not going to be fun" to middling. You make of it what you can.
Only one of the area football teams is a year-to-year playoff contender. Most of the schools are frankly not successful in most sports. There are a handful of individual solid-to-standout athletes in the region, but, to be honest, and I'm trying to, it's a lot of "lipstick on a pig" and make of it what you can stuff.
I'm being entirely honest also because I can. No one from my organization, state-wide, will ever see this. I'm also "retiring" from sports journalism for now, after 27 years (including college) in the business. CMG shifted me to Iowa after cutting my job in Indiana in late 2020, and I'm just tired of a lot of things. The last career decision I made before deciding to leave the industry - for now - was when I moved to suburban MIlwaukee roughly 12 years ago,
