Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

Lots of folks on my Facebook timeline have have added an overlay of the Somali flag to their profile picture.

Who am I kidding? That only happens if white/Europeans are the victims of terrorists.

The dearth of responses here says it all.

Stick an attack of this magnitude in any Western white people country and it's the only thing we'd be talking about tonight.

Stick it in Somalia and ..well ...yawn..

It’s no soccer game ...

276 pales in comparison with what's going on in 'Murrica. We just spread it out week to week.

This is very true. And it goes for countries in the Middle East not called Israel, too.

Well, that's their story.

When is the U.S. going to notice?

Never.

If the media gave attention to every deadly Islamic terror attack, they could not also push the narrative that Islam is a religion of peace, twisted by only a few evil doers.

So, as long as white people aren't the victims, it won't be news.

I mean, there were plenty of news stories.

I think this has more to do with what the public cares about than what media gives attention to.

It’s how it’s covered and how much attention is given to it.

Running a Reuters article doesn’t mean you’ve “covered” it.

It's been played up here more so, but it is CNN international so it's to be expected.

This evening in the gym, the defeat of ISIS was all over the channel.

FTFY

Terror attack in St. Petersburg subway received little notice in America compared to anything in London or Paris.

And that minor little thingy with the plane bombing that killed 219 Russians heading from Egypt to St. Petersburg . . . meh.

The fall of Raqqa is barely getting covered here.

Again, not the story the media wants to tell their domestic audience.

If it was Spain people would care, and they are only kind of white.

The United States is essentially a Europe annex. Same political systems. Same culture. Americans visit Europe. They are real places to people.

Somalia is a war-torn country in Africa that hardly anyone from the U.S. visits.

I'm not saying it's right. But it's not solely about race.

That's a good point, about places Americans visit.

I got into it with my dad about Paris, because he posted some trite nonsense because he had visited.
