SJ Heisman balloting

Lets run a Heisman poll to see who we would give the award to. I can't remember a more wide-open race.

Vote for three players - rank them 1-2-3 - either in a post on this thread or by sending me a PM. Votes must be cast before noon (Eastern) on Dec. 6.

The SEC and Big 12 championship games will mean a lot here, so I think a lot of people will abstain until Dec. 5. As will I, though Gerhart's a strong No. 1 to me unless something amazing happens Saturday.

I have to ask myself, where would each team be without each Heisman candidate and I must say Florida would not be undefeated and we would not be talking about Stanford. Texas would probably still be pretty damn good and ND would stilll be pretty damn bad without their quarterbacks... so here it is.

After watching Ingram against Auburn. ... I am convinced Gerhart deserves the award, with C.J. Spiller the only other candidate who deserves to make a decent showing. While watching Texas vs. Texas A&M, if I didn't know Colt McCoy was Colt McCoy, I might have wondered if Jerrod Johnson was the Heisman candidate. McCoy certainly didn't look the part to me.

1. Gerhart. For a running back to dominate anymore the way he did is amazing. And his performance in the Notre Dame game raised his profile.
2. Tebow. A phenomenon, and the best duel threat in the game.
3. Suh. The best season for a defender in college football in years.
4. Clausen. Clearly has talent and had several spectacular efforts.


McCoy is surrounded by a ****load of talent and is more steady than spectacular. I don't think Ingram is as good as Gerhart. Keenum had decent efforts against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, but piled up a lot of his numbers against lesser competition; same for Kellen Moore.

Berry's not having the kind of year he did in 2008 but he's still a hell of a player.

And I forgot about Suh. He should merit some consideration.

I voted for McCoy because, even with all of that talent around him, there is no question that UT is his team. He is their unquestioned leader and I don't know if they're unbeaten without him. It's not something you can quantify but that's just the feeling I get when I watch that team play.

nah, 304 yards and 4 tds passing and 175 yards rushing (including a 65-yard td) doesn't look the part at all.

As someone who's watched every ND game... please, give that vote to Golden Tate. Clausen is a good QB, but really dropped off in the second half of the year. It soon became clear that he was relying on his two gifted WRs.

Tate's a beast. Catches everything - including a Hail Mary - quick, fast, blocks and refuses to be tackled. Nine games over 100 yards, two over 200. Couple rushing TDs, and took a punt back.

Clausen had 28 TDs, and 15 of them went to Tate.

My ballot would be a mix of Gerhart, Moore (from Boise State) and Ingram.

Because the Heisman should go to the best PLAYER (not necessarily the one on the best team):

1. Toby Gerhart, Stanford RB
2. Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska DT
3. Tim Tebow, Florida QB

Those three guys are great players that mean a ton to their teams.

And I would give an honorable mention to another QB ... Dan LeFevour of the CMU Chippewas. Although he hasn't played against the level of competition as some other college QBs, he's a great talent who will get a look in the NFL. (Full disclosure: I've always rooted for him because he's a good kid who grew up in the same part of Chicagoland I did)

In a game with very little defense (and A&M had the much weaker defense of the two), McCoy went 24 for 40 throwing the ball against a 6-6 team. Nope, I am not super impressed.

Factor in that most of his passes were bubble screens and dump offs and that a great deal of those 304 yards were the result of the fact that 1) he had a lot of plays to rack up stats with, and 2) he didn't air the ball out and take over the game with his arm, and again, no, I am not that impressed. Jerrod Johnson had 342 yards passing (26 for 33; much better completion percentage and against a better defense) and 4 TD passes, too. He also had more to do with his team hanging in the game than McCoy did. The score was 42-39 after Johnson's fourth TD pass and it wasn't McCoy that salted it, it was a 95-yard Kickoff return by Marquis Goodwin and a missed A&M field goal that could have made it interesting down the stretch.

If you are going to give McCoy the Heisman, it should be a team award given to Texas. If it is still an individual award, I stand by my opinion. Toby Gerhart and C.J. Spiller are the two most deserving players this year (working within the confines of offensive players usually getting the award, with preference given to QBs and RBs).

I'm kind of upset that verbalkint made the case for Golden Tate before I could post, because I now I look like he swayed me. Though I wasn't aware of Tate's numbers, I can't remember being more impressed by a player over the course of the season (of course, Saturday was the first time I saw Gerhart play all year). Tate was a beast this year, one of the few bright spots on that team.

And I'd vote for Suh, but I'm trying to be realistic here, because it's going to an offensive player.
