He's the leader in the clubhouse after that U.S. Open performance. Is anyone else even withing striking range?

Tiger has won the award twice so far. It's been eight years since the last time. That's a long enough wait for his third Sportsman of the Year award.

Consider this an official sports prediction.

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

Yes. Either Tiger or Javon Walker. Mmmm, I'll go with your Tiger prediction.

And I thought this was going to be Bill Belichick's year.

If he'd won The Masters, I might agree. But we aren't even halfway through the year yet.

I'll take an "Olympic athlete to be named later" instead of Tiger.

I was thinking maybe an Olympian.

But no summer Olympian has won the award since Mary Lou Retton.

Back in 1996, Tiger was named Sportsman of the Year for less than he's done this year. He's played six events, won four (one a major on a leg that was about to fall off), and finished second once. Who knows how long his leg's been messed up. Six events and he's first in money, FedEx Cup points, and scoring average!

Maybe some kind of Boston fan award if the Red Sox would win the World Series again?

Or maybe some kind of Indians fan award if the Indians would win the World Series again (forthefirsttimesince1948). :D :D :D

Seriously, if the Cubs win...Tiger ain't winning SoTY.

Good call. But who would get it from the Cubs if they win? They just gave the whole Red Sox team the award when they won in 2004. Would SI play the same card twice in four years? Of course, they gave it to the whole US Women's soccer team in 1999.

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

Who knows? Maybe Sweet Lou? (edit: Thanks shockey!) He'll lock up the HOF if the Cubs win the Series.

You know what would be an awesome call if the Cubs win? Steve Bartman. Symbolizing the undying loyalty of fans and their ability to forgive after a long-suffering team finally wins. Or some **** like that.

Make sure to save this thread in case I'm right, TSP! :D

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

Hard to imagine with his season being over. Not sure who else, but we have a half year to play with still, including MLB & Olympics.

They love resurrection stories, which gives me a decent guess:

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

Keep in mind that SI likes to pick someone who'll move magazines when they put him on the cover, and I don't think Sweet Lou's big ol' boiler would do that. As for Olympians, they'll probably steer clear of track and field types because anyone they pick might test positive the next day. I think Tiger's the prohibitive favorite. It's going to take something truly spectacular to beat him. Gary Smith's probably working on the piece as we speak.

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

If the Red Sox win the series again and the Pats get off to another fast start, along with the Celtics already crowned, watch SI do some Boston lube job.

I don't necessarily disagree with Tiger as the pick, but I think SI sometimes chooses SOY based on the best story it can get, and I don't know if essentially a U.S. Open rehash six months after the fact is that great. Then again, Tiger on the cover is money (EDIT: as Broadway said). So who knows.

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

Good call, Guy, but only if the Rangers make the playoffs or he wins the Triple Crown. So............no.

Randy Johnson's one ugly sumbitch but they figured out a way to make him look presentable when he and Schilling won it.

There's always something to be done with Photoshop and/or a creative cover.

Re: SI Sportsman of the Year = Tiger Woods

I am going with Paul Pierce. Brings title 17 to Boston. Was amazing throughout the playoffs. Sticking with crappy teams, toughness, etc.

A worse choice than Dwyane Wade, and that's saying something.
