Terrible, awful, surprising and I hope we don’t see copycats.

Cue the U.S. gun nuts saying, "see ... it isn't just us," while ignoring the fact that there's about one shooting per year in Japan.

Absolutely stunning that he was gunned down in public in Japan. Horrific.

Huge security failure that a guy carrying that thing was able to get that close to Abe.

In America, we are so hyper-sensitive to guns, it's our first thought. The rest of the world doesn't think this way, I think.

Maybe so, but if a dignitary's bodyguard does not they are utterly incompetent. From the look of that video the shooter was at most 40-50 feet away, and a black powder weapon with barrels that short is not accurate unless the range is very short.

I suspect that Japanese protective details are going to undergo the same sort of after action reforms that the U.S. Secret Service did post JFK.

Plus Japan (nor any other country) has not had the following mass shootings in the span of one month:

elementary school
supermarket
parade

I think I read where Japan had like 10 fatal shootings all of last year, compared to 30,000+ in the U.S.
