SANDUSKY, Ohio - A man who appeared drunk walked into a Taco Bell restaurant earlier this week and handed the manager $72 for one taco, the manager said.

The manager told police near the northern Ohio town of Sandusky that the customer, who seemed to be in his early 20s, refused to take back the money and told workers "Merry Christmas."

Manager Aaron Ohm said he thought for sure the man would return for his money, but he so far he hasn't shown up.

It's a nice thing, and I wish it would happen more often. Me and the Mrs try and make a habit out of leaving a hefty tip (like $25 or $50) on a small restaurant bill, when we are in a financial position to do so, when we notice the waitress or waiter is obviously struggling to make due. We don't do it enough, though.

A couple of weeks ago at church, our pastor was talking about how fortunate our church has been, with good decision making, planning and a generous congregation (it's a pretty decent-sized inner-city church in a medium-sized town, and it's not full of wealthy people). Anyway, they found themselves $40,000 in the black at the end of their fiscal year. After he said that, he asked one represenative from each family in the church to stand, and just then the ushers all came down the aisles and started handing out envelopes to those standing. The pastor talked about what they were going to do with the money, because they are not in the habit of holding on to it, or using it to add-on to the building, rather they usually give away that money to some charitible cause. (they have given the entire Christmas offering away for the past 10 years to a predetermined and prediscused charity or cause) Anyway, they talked about how they thought it would be a good idea to trust the church body with the money . . . then they asked us to open the envelopes. There was 50 bucks inside each one, and we were tasked with finding a worthwile person or charity for the money.

I trust my church because of decisions like that and the fact they give away the entire christmas offering. But beyond that, I see this as an opportuntiy to bring out the good in people and bring joy into other people's lives, even if it is for a short time, because $50 can only go so far.

Stories like the one in Sandusky make me smile.

We had a story in the Charlotte paper recently about disciples of the "Skid-Row Santa" guy who passed out $100 bills around Christmas for years. They were driving around Charlotte passing out money to all kinds of people. With police escort, they pulled over a guy on a rickety old bike and gave him $100. It was a very neat story.

Maybe because rich people got more to spend to buy another yacht, while poor people got a few hundred bucks to pay for their food and medical bills, of which, the prices continued to rise anyways?
