Miller obviously had every sympathy for Monty's plight on the 18th, and none for Phil's. And that's exactly the way everyone should feel. Monty blew a shot under pressure. Mickelson blew his decision-making under pressure, that's way worse.

Disagree. Ogilvy's star has been rising big-time in the golf world the last couple years.  He's got a ton of game, and he's won a PGA event each of the last two years.  He's a bona fide top 20 player.

Ogilvy got to play with no pressure and didn't really have to "earn" it in a championship situation.

Jeff, I love you but here's where we disagree.  They play 72 holes. Lowest score wins.   Oglivy had +5.  No one else was that "low."  He beats.

Now, I understand your point. But he knew going into 18 that he was close to the top and that there was a chance.  He was off the green on 18 and did one hell of a job getting up and down knowing he had NO chance if he didn't.  Well, turns out he DID have a chance if he didn't but he didn't know that.

Not the same as standing over a putt that wins or loses but still.  He got through the 72 better than anyone.  He wins.  Legitimately.

I agree with the Boss-man. Ogilvy chips in from a mediocre lie and gets up and down from a mediocre lie on the 71st and 72nd hole of the US Open. He's the ONLY one of the guys in the final groups to do it. This put everyone else in a position to gack it away in their final two or three holes.

Ogilvy is a legit winner and has plenty of game to play with the big boys, especially on tough courses.

No, Ogilvy has chops. No reason to lump him in with Ben Curtis, who won way before he ever should have, Todd Hamilton (!) and Shaun Micheel, whose best finish since winning the 2003 PGA was fifth in the Southern Farm Bureau Championship last year. Hell, he got one fifth of his career winnings from that one PGA victory.

Ogilvy is solid, and he earned the win by parring the holes no one else could. But this will always be known as a tournament thrown away by Mickelson and Monty, and as the years go by it's going to be tough to remember Ogilvy as the winner (unless maybe he wins more majors). He's more likely to be remembered like Paul Lawrie in the Van de Velde British Open, which is to say, somewhat of a footnote. At least everywhere but Austrailia

Another story we're overlooking here with Mickelson and Monty sitting in the corner with the puke stains on their shirts is the fact that David Duval finished six strokes back of the leaders, easily his best finish in a Major in five years.

NBC should pay to keep Johnny Miller. He said something to the effect of "I know everybody loves Phil, but seriously, what is he thinking?"

EXACTLY.

He ****ing knew par was good enough to win. And he probably should have known that bogey was at least going to be good enough to force a playoff, where his 25,000 hours of preparation at Winged Foot could've paid off.

All this talk about the new Phil, it's all hogwash now. Old Phil is back. Everybody get your hard hats.
