I've been gone for a while, mostly because I have been trying to resist the temptation to make actionable threats in the baseball and politics threads, but it's Grand Final weekend again!
Saturday's Grand Final from the Melbourne Cricket Ground pits two of the last three premiers: defending champions Brisbane (my favorite team) and Geelong.
Geelong finished second at 17-6 and Brisbane third (16-6-1) in the regular season "ladder," and though Brisbane won both regular-season meetings (the first of which was postponed by a cyclone), the Cats won convincingly in the opening round of the playoffs. The AFL's playoff system allows teams that finish in the top four two chances to win one playoff game to get into the preliminary final (basically, the semifinals). The "minor premiers" (regular-season champions), Adelaide, crashed out in "straight sets" to No. 4 Collingwood and No. 8 Hawthorn.
Brisbane fought their way back to a third-consecutive Grand Final by wiping out local rivals Gold Coast, then seeing off Collingwood, scoring exactly 100 points both times. Geelong took care of Hawthorn by 30 but suffered a serious blow because in the preliminary final last weekend, one of their top players got concussed, and the league's rules mandate 12 days out if you go into the concussion protocol.
For some reason, it sounds like the Grand Final (9:30 p.m. Pacific on Friday night) has been kicked down to FS2, which might be a bit more difficult to find, but those who do, there's a special reward: Snoop Dogg is the pregame entertainment! Because we haven't heard from him in a while.

Too bad because I used to enjoy the Grey Cup halftime show while it was mostly CanCon until they invited Imagine Dragons to play and then I punched out. Aussies don't have the same rules but Snoopy .... dawg, been there, done that.

The entire first two thirds of the game was super scrappy and things appeared to be destined for a close, defensive finish, but led by Charlie Cameron, who celebrates goals by revving an imaginary motorcycle and choruses of "Country Roads" for some reason, Brisbane dominated the game from the last five minutes of the third quarter on, turning what was a 45-44 game with five minutes left in the third term into a 18.14.122 to 11.9.75 blowout.
