The Open is at Shinnecock Hills this year. That's really far from Elmont, NY even if they are on same island. How much overlap is there between the audiences for these two events anyway? This strikes me as a phony excuse.

Audiences? Probably not much, but transit capacity would be a huge problem, no?

That said, with one exception (2048), the US Open is now booked up through 2051. After this year, Shinnecock is 2036 but other than that, they'd be good (assuming Winged Foot in 2028 wouldn't mess things up via proximity even though it's not on Long Island).

And even then, the listed dates for 2036 are the earliest they can be within June (the 12th-15th), so maybe that year they could punt and put four weeks between the Preakness and Belmont and miss it entirely.
