Rivalry Thread

Auburn-LSU was a bigger rivalry to LSU fans for years until Nick went to Bama. The Tide won too often in the series for it to be as good a rivalry as LSU-Ole Miss in the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s.

Ole Miss comes closest to being the biggest rival over multiple decades. Right now, it's Bama. From 2001-06, it was Auburn. For a stretch long ago, it was Tulane. So again, no true primary rival year in, year out.

Kermit vs. all non soccer fans...

I will throw a lost rivalry out there. Penn State vs. Notre Dame....that used to shut down large sections of PA when I was kid in the 1980s and early 1990s. I remember regular fistfights about that game in my school.

How about Penn St/Pitt back in the day?

Pitt-West-by-God Virginia in the Backyard Brawl is pretty good.

Who is LSU's top rival?

Proper hygiene.

point; aqb.

And I can't freaking believe I forgot Auburn-Alabama; Texas/Texas A&M, Army/Navy when I started this thread.

Auburn/Alabama is something I even record every year, not for the game, but CBS has always done some incredible intros for The Iron Bowl.

I'm telling you, I would listen to Verne Lundquist read the dictionary.

I don't think a rivalry between neighboring states can reach the animosity level of an in-state blood feud. Having to live and work beside the enemy angries up the blood. And I say that as a Bama fan more emotionally invested in beating UT than winning the Iron Bowl.

Not necessarily. The Kansas-Missouri rivalry has everything to do with being neighboring states and the history that goes along with it. KU/K-State never has and never will have the same intensity because it's just about sports. It's more like a sibling rivalry, but KU-Mizzou is pure hatred that stems for actual warring.

And you have plenty of KU and Mizzou people living and working beside each other in Kansas City.

Army-Navy is a great rivalry. I would agree that it is probably the coolest rivalry in college football, but I can't see how it is bigger today than Michigan-Ohio State or Bama-Auburn.

The coolest rival games I've ever been to are Army-Navy and Florida-Georgia.

The biggest rivals are Ohio State-Michigan and Bama-Auburn.
I think the festivities surrounding the Florida-Georgia game are the best of all rivalries. Now if they could just move the game out of such a boring city.

They shouldn't do anything to change that game. I hate Jacksonville, but everything about that game is perfect. When you look down on the stadium and one half is one color and the other half is the other color, it's pretty ****ing cool.

The only problem with that game is that it seems like playing 75 minutes from Gainesvegas is a bigger advantage for Florida than Georgia, which is at least 5-6 hours away and Florida gets a huge recruiting advantage by having a game there every year because some of those high schools in Jacksonville have crazy levels of talent.

I've been to Alabama-Auburn, Michigan-Michigan State, Texas-Oklahoma and Texas A&M-Texas.

UA-AU is light years ahead of any of the others. The one I attended wound up being Mike Shula's last game at Bama and damn, that was an ugly crowd.

Michigan-Michigan State is much more bitter than people outside the state realize.

Also, LSU-Ole Miss has some deep-seated and long-established hatred as well.

A match-up that isn't a rivalry yet but will become one rather quickly is Iowa-Nebraska.

Johnnies-Tommies?

Or does one of the teams have to win more than two games in 20 years for it to be heated?

I saw Gophers-Badgers mentioned. I'm sorry, but the Gophers of the last 40 years can not be anyone's rival, especially a team who has more fans than the Gophers do - in Minnesota's home stadium.

Actually, I should probably throw in Carleton-Macalester. When the trophy is something called The Book of Knowledge, you know it's a serious rivalry.

And St. John's still sucks.

And you have to love it being called "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" even if the NCAA does not approve.

I know it says rivalry and not football rivalry, but if you think Mizzou-KU is on the same level as Bama-Auburn, you're on crack.

I've been to five Florida-Georgia games and my only real criticism of it is that the rivalry doesn't seen to have similar levels of hatred on both sides, something that I'm guessing is a direct result of Spurrier kicking the **** out of them the entire time he was coach.

These days, Florida assumes it's going to win and Georgia assumes it's going to lose.

After Spurrier quit, I think the Orlando Sentinel had a Q&A with Spurrier where they asked him what his worst loss was.

I read the question and thought, "Well, duh, the beating Nebraska gave them that cost them the national title."

Spurrier answered that the worst one for him was the one time Florida lost to Georgia when he was coach.

I was just saying that not being in the same state doesn't lessen the rivalry. Not being good at football does. And as much as they hate each other, Kansas City is a pretty civilized place, so you don't see some of the crazy antics like you do in Alabama.

Until Bobby Bowden showed up, most older Florida grads consider Georgia their biggest rival because they rarely lost to Florida State.

Until Steve Spurrier showed up, most younger Florida grads consider Florida State their biggest rival because they rarely lost to Georgia.

Jake speaks the truth on this. The intensity is always there for football, but I doubt it'll rise to the 2007-08 levels again in my lifetime.... especially 2007.

In basketball, the vitriol is always there, and always will be.

The vitriol is there, but when one team always beats the **** out of the other, is it really a rivalry?
