RIP William Hurt

His most recent role, I believe, was in "Goliath." Aging lawyer sparring with the star, Billy Bob Thornton, also a lawyer. He looked like he was ready to die, but it might have been theatrical makeup.

I can see a lot of news people - like Jeff Zucker say - watch the "tear scene" in Broadcast News and wonder why Holly Hunter freaked out.

Really wish they got around to making a Big Chill reunion - I believe Hurt is the first from that cast to die (not including Don Galloway). I'm thinking JoBeth Williams and perhaps Berenger would have gone "Trumper" - would have made for a lively weekend with them bitching about millennials, their confusing phones and sciatica.
Might be too late, but the original gathering in The Big Chill was for the death of a close friend in the inner circle…

I’d watch that. (And one of my favorite bits of movie trivia that pretty much everyone knows is that it was Kevin Costner in the casket in The Big Chill but his scenes got cut.)

For me, it’s a toss-up between Chill and Broadcast News as my favorites of Hurt’s long list of great performances.

I always wondered why he didn't work more. Didn't know he lived in Portland. Curious about the natural causes (particularly when it sounds like the family was gathered).

Costner and Hurt reunited in "Mr. Brooks." Another good watch, filmed in PDX. I had no idea Hurt lived in Oregon, a place celebs can often live undisturbed and under the radar.

Yeah, he had at least two former lovers make seriously troubling accusations that, fortunately for him, weren't exposed a decade later.

When Marlee Matlin Accused William Hurt of Sexual Assault
JFC ...

At the time when Matlin’s memoir was published, the media seemed largely unwilling to call William Hurt what he was: a man accused of physically abusing and raping his girlfriend. Instead, his and Matlin’s time together was described as passionate and “volatile”; even Simon & Schuster’s description of the memoir evaded direct language, instead teasing tales of her “tumultuous relationship with Oscar winner William Hurt.”

During an appearance on Larry King Live to discuss the book, guest host Joy Behar opened the discussion by asking Matlin, “All right, let’s talk about William Hurt. What’s the deal between the two of you? Was it love? Was it lust?” later adding, “And you said in the book that the sex with him was spectacular. Now you’ve piqued my interest. Can we have a few details here?”

OK - I guess now I know why he seemed to spend most of his post-Oscar time playing supporting roles.

That was the last role I saw him in - and the character, like Hurt, - knew he didn't have much time left. Apparently received a terminal diagnosis in 2018 after prostate cancer spread to his bones.
