RIP Wayne Comer

Wow. With Horton/Northrup/Stanley/Kaline/Gates Brown in Detroit, Comer was never really going to get out of Toledo without expansion. Sort of the same issue with Don Pepper (Dottie's father) and Norm Cash.

According to his SABR bio, Comer went 1-for-1 in the 1968 World Series as a pinch hitter, but his claim to fame was warming up Mickey Lolich between innings.

Put up good numbers for the Pilots in 1969 but started 0-for-15 in 1970 for the Brewers, was traded to the Senators, and didn't get another 200 plate appearances in the majors.

I believe there were only seven or eight players able to make it back to Detroit for the 1968 reunion photo this summer. Not surprising most of them are in declining health, particularly McLain and Lolich.

A member of the Tigers' 1968 World Series title team and the 1969 Seattle Pilots. Jim Bouton portrayed Comer as a big-time jerk in "Ball Four."

Yes, Bouton laid the lumber on Comer in the book. According to Wikipedia, he called Comer "often hostile, belligerent, profane, and eager to engage in fist fights."

Hey, that's a Saturday night double date where I come from. RIP, Wayne Comer.

Bob Terlecki is one of my favorite cups of coffee.

1972 ... debut at 27 ... called up by the Phils on August 16 ... 9 appearances, 0 decisions ... in debut on 8/16 he fielded a squeeze by Concepcion and got Perez at home ... gave up a homer to Perez 2 innings later ... gave up a single to Clemente on 9/26 ... pitched 2 innings on 10/1 and then the season ended ... and he never pitched in the majors again ... teammates with '72 NL Cy Young winner Steve Carlton, he of 27 wins (of the Phils' 59 total) and 1.69 ERA ...

Bob Terlecki's cup of coffee: 4.73 ERA over 13.1 innings and 65 batters, 2 HR, 4 doubles, 10 walks allowed, 5 K's, and Clemente singled off him.

I took this shot of him inside a Jersey barbershop holding a photo from '72.
