I’m not sure ripping a photo of a religious man gets you on God’s ****list (at least I hope not) but I’m guessing her anger toward JPII didn’t begin and end with him.

God as she understood God is Allah. She converted a couple of years ago.

Found out from the WaPo obit the picture she tore up was taken down from the wall of her mom’s house after she died. Considering her mom beat her regularly growing up, there were a billion layers to that moment, none of which of course got reported at the time because we chase stupid shiny objects then and now.

About a week or two later, she got booed off the stage at MSG during the Dylan anniversary concert. Those were different times, 20 years later I don’t think gets the same negative reaction.

One thing that fueled the anger over the Pope photo: she was waaaay ahead of the curve on that one, at least in the U.S. The abuse in the Catholic Church was not well known at all here. Her actions seemed wildly out of the blue -- people just didn't understand the protest at all.

Exactly. Even in my little slice of the country, it wasn’t until 13 years after O’Connor’s protest that a grand jury report finally brought all of the abuse to light in Philly.

I was in high school when she tore up the pope picture, and our dean of students was likely diddling one or more kids WHILE she was doing it. He was one of four teachers/admins from my high school who were quietly arrested and “reassigned” in the early ‘90s.
