Over the winter I was looking for something in the crawlspace, came upon a box and opened it and found this board game. Forgot I'd had it, it might have been in that box for 35 years. l opened it up and saw I had divided the player cards into four teams and started a season, with my post high school scrawl on lined pages for the stats and schedule. Like @maumann I put it on the dining room table and brought back some memories. I know what I'll be doing over the winter waiting for the next baseball season.

As an aside, SI/Avalon Hill had some great games: this, Paydirt (NFL), Title Bout Boxing (that was in the same box in the crawlspace, man I loved that game, I really need to continue my all-time light heavyweight champions tournament) and I remember my brothers and I had college football and auto racing too.

Some dude made an electronic version of this game. It's called Dombrov baseball. It's very DIY, has some things missing (you can't automatically do a hit-and-run, but you can make yourself a house rule to get around it), but it's cool and for $25 you can play any season ever.

As much as I loved Pursue The Pennant, and later, the PC version of Strat, their play probability percentages weren't that much more elaborate than Dombrov is. They are better on some extras like range charts, stadium effects, etc. but you also pay through the nose for all of it. I think single Strat seasons are at least $30.

So if you want an economical option, check it out. I'm playing a truncated 1978 season at present. It's fun.

Edit: You can also set it (as you can with Strat) so you can roll your own dice. For some reason, I really like that. Makes me feel like they’re “my” rolls, not a computer algorithm.

There are also probably a lot of 50-something women who would have gladly put up with helmet hair in exchange for being married to one of the highest-paid players in MLB.

Played the dice Strat-O-Matic game as a kid, for hours/days/seasons on end, keeping stats and all that.

Now I'm semi-obsessed with Out of the Park Baseball. Fully licensed with all MLB/minor-league and KBL teams, plus has basically all seasons from baseball history included. Can whip out a game fairly quickly, and be as involved (manager or GM/owner) as you want to make it.

OOTP is awesome. The one and only reason I prefer card-and-dice games is that you feel like you have more control over the outcome. Or alternately, you know the method by which an outcome is reached.

OOTP has myriad ratings, but I don’t know how it determines individual at-bats. It’s an algorithm, and while it’s a good one, there’s something (for me) missing in that part of the experience.
