If you can get by the b&w and the social times of the very early 60's, I highly recommend watching the DVD show. They filmed 5 seasons, a few episodes are
clunkers, but what show does not have them. All depends on your sense of humor of course.

Two things about the DVD show that were before their time - Rose Marie working as a full time comedy writer, basically just one of the guys at work, and Mary Tyler Moore refusing to allow her Laura to be shown doing housework, vacuuming and such, in a nice dress, high heels, and a frilly apron. Her character wore slacks and capri pants at home, same as real women did. This resulted in the sponsors squawking, to the point that they griped about her slacks being too tight and showing her ass too fully. They limited her to one scene per show in such snug pants. The show fought this, and eventually simply ignored it.

To me, the best thing about the **** Van Dyke Show was having Rob work as a comedy writer. That allowed them to have one scene per show that was nothing but DVD, Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie sitting around their office firing off one-liners and doing comedy sketches.
