World champion player, longtime broadcaster. He lived in my community and I went to kindergarten with his son.

Actually, he made his ML debut in 1958, the Dodgers' first year in LA. Baseball Almanac.com has the last active Brooklyn player as Bob Aspromonte, who had one at-bat with the Dodgers in 1956, and then didn't play in the bigs again until 1960.

Fairly does have one distinction: He's the only player to represent both Canadian teams in the All-Star Game, going with the Expos in '73 and the Blue Jays in '77.
I remember he spent his last year as a player with the Angels in 1978, and then retired and started his broadcasting career with the Halos in 1979.

Always felt bad for Fairly as an announcer because he seemed to have to follow some greats - Hank Greewald in SF, Ken Levine in Seattle - those two could spin some tales.

He was a rough listen the two years Hank did the Yankees, but thrived as No. 2 guy when he returned. Good at anticipating the play and both could tell stories with the best of them.

I believe he also came out of retirement to help the Mariners a bit after Dave Niehaus died.
