Damn, I feel old today for multiple reasons.

Had one of his greatest days at Belmont Park aboard Secretariat in 1973 and was paralyzed for the last 47 years of his life after a terrible accident there five years later.

RIP, Ron.

We only guess how much lower the final time in the Belmont might have been if there had been a reason to ask Secretariat do something more than coast in the second half of the race — which is ridiculous considering he went the first half in 46-1/5 and six furlongs in 1:09-4/5.

My old man knew Turcotte a bit from when he was driving the ambulance at Woodbine and Turcotte was riding there. He thought it was criminal that an exception from the careless riding suspension he'd had couldn't be made for him to ride Secretariat in his last race at Woodbine.
