One of my favorite Reiner roles was the grifter QB he played in an episode of “Rockford Files”.

His throwaway line about bush in “Wolf Of Wall Street” cracked me up first I heard it.

And, yeah, watching an “All In The Family” episode will take you back to the 70s in the best and worst ways. Much of it was heat of the moment hot button stuff that, in hindsight, doesn’t and cannot resonate the same way 50 years later.

That and let’s be honest … Norman Lear’s shows, revolutionary though they were, had so many characters who tended to be black-and-white caricatures rather than shades of gray realism. A lot of it is cringy … and not just because of changing times either.

I decided to rewatch some episodes of New Girl (highly underrated sitcom, btw). Reiner plays Zoey Deschanel’s dad, and he just kills it in every appearance.

His scenes with Jake Johnson are incredible. They just play off each other so well. And Reiner’s humor is so effortless.

I didn't realize he was on that show. I only watched a few episodes of it. My daughter loves it. She has watched it all the way through multiple times. I haven't had the chance to talk to her about Reiner yet. I'll have to bring it up to her that way.

The only thing that hasn’t aged well is that Archie Bunker is somehow a tamer version of what many in this country are now. People who talk about Michelle Obama looking like a man, people eating cats and dogs and people deciding that bringing back “gay” and “retard” is just fine.

The episode was about how hilarious it was that someone would want to rape someone old and ugly like Edith. (She eventually hits the rapist on the head with a frying pan and everyone has a good laugh.)

The episode where the Bunkers got robbed (by Ron Glass and Demond Wilson) had a scene where Reiner said to the robbers after an Archie rant something to the effect of No he doesn’t understand how your people were oppressed and held back. Glass responds Oh, and I suppose you do. Reiner had a sheepish grin and said nothing

I’ve see those episodes (it’s a two-parter) and when they were filming it, apparently the studio audience was ready to storm the stage because they were so angry that their Edith was being assaulted. When she did hit him with the pan and escaped, they apparently had to stop the show for a few minutes because the studio audience wouldn’t stop cheering.

The actor who portrayed the rapist had to deal with angry fans for years afterward because the assault was real to them, dammit.

I thought it was played pretty straight. When Edith shoved the cake in his face, it wasn't a big laugh, more like "the ****er deserved it."
