RIP Richard Roundtree

Shaft? He's a complicated man but no one understands him but his woman. Can you dig it?

RIP. A ground-breaking role considering the time and stereotypes of the day. Southern schools and government offices were still in the process of being integrated and a black actor as an action star (unlike say, the sauve Sidney Poitier)? Pretty heady stuff. Led to an entire genre of blaxploitation films.

Plus the title song is still one of the funkiest jams going on 50 years now.

I just saw the latest installment, from around 2020, where Roundtree plays Grandpa Shaft. Yeah, he was a bad Mamma Jamma.

Very sad news. Legendary guy. Was a high-profile model before gaining instant-icon status in early-70s cinema.

Years before Billy Dee Williams and Colt 45, in 1980 he repped Schlitz Malt Liquor (with Antonio Fargas):

Roundtree also had a key role in one of my favorite bad movies of all time: Antitrust!

RIP
