Is my Herald-issued trash-80 in the basement now a valuable collector's item? And oh, those ****ing couplers!

I once expensed a $75 cab ride to buy acoustic couplers at Radio Shack.

Hadn't been there too often in recent years, but I always hate to see a longtime national chain like that close. Plus, they have a location in my town, and I hate to see another empty storefront.

An old Radio Shack ad is floating around on the Internet. Full page newspaper ad, 1980, 1981.

Every single piece of electronics on it, I can do with my phone. There's maybe 20, 25 pieces of gear. And every single thing is either built in or an app.

My phone can't double as a radio-controlled car. That was a pretty cool Radio Shack product back in the day. My Datsun 280ZX could get to end of my driveway in under 30 seconds.

Heaven needed a store that tried to aggressively sell you a new cell phone plan every time you bought a pair of AAA batteries.

Well, at least the owner of the local Radio Shack has stuff to fall back on. He also owns the U.S. Cellular franchise and the radio station.

Thank God they stopped advertising in papers for the most part. If they still had a circular I could see the memo saying "VERY IMPORTANT MEETING!" in my mailbox the day after the shutdown was announced.

RIP Radio Shack. Good run.
