I just think there's a different energy to someone's work if I know they're still out there. And I worry about an author completely falling out of favor just because they died. I still think Thomas Wolfe is great (I may be the only one left!) but we're a decade away from him being forgotten to history completely, aren't we?

I think the monastic approach came late. Before that he struggled and struggled.

And was a very bad husband.

Missed what, exactly? I definitely lament the passing of influential writers, but their influence seemed done, in as much as they weren’t creating any more influential work. Roth retired, a noble out. The influence of such writers is still there if you go back and revisit their great works. In that regard, they’re not dead to me and never will be.

I hear that. I'm reading The Fight again right now. But I would love to read him on Trump, for instance. I'd love to read him on LeBron.

I work with 18-year-olds a lot. I'm not going to judge him on this one. If I could kick them out of my sphere, I would do so with a smile on my face.

Yeah, and what were the circumstances with Bloom’s 18-year-old daughter? Why was she not in college or working? I honestly wouldn’t know Clare Bloom from Adam. If I’ve seen her in film, I’m not aware of it. Now Gore Vidal, there’s a ****-stirrer I miss.

My family's circle was rooted in Newark's Weequahic (pronounced Week-wake) section and high school of the 30s and 40s, so I grew up knowing people who played softball, etc, with "Phil" Roth. Read my first novel, Portnoy's Complaint, at 11 and re-read through my teens, I can still tell you the best parts started on page 121. When I asked my Dad about the novel, he asserted Roth was "insane".

I was too young to catch it in real time. The '68 Democratic Convention was the first one I really watched much of... but that wasn't typical convention coverage, you know?. No way a twelve year old budding political junkie was watching those two guys debate, though. I knew very little about it till I saw the film. Very well done.

Started reading Portnoy's Complaint and the neuroses is high 30 pages in. The chapter 2 jerking off is quite fetching.

With Wolfe and Roth both dying in such proximity, it made me realize we're starting to lose all the writers who remember the world before television. I don't know if that's important, but it seems like it might be. Just like I think it was important when we lost all the writers who remembered the world before film and how momentous it will be when all the writers who remember the world before the internet die. There just seems to be a sensibility picked up by living in those eras and I don't know if you can ever try to re-create it later.

At this rate, it seems like we're about to lose the writers who remember the world before cable.

I was looking forward to this book after reading the New Yorker piece on it.

I’d still like to read it without putting money in that man’s pocket. I hope there’s a bootleg online version available at some point.
