Once upon a time, writing a quality song was considered a valuable skill.

Very sad news. Her rendition of Dylan’s “Boots of Spanish Leather” off the 30th Anniversary Concert is the standard by which all covers of that song should be measured. Backed by Carolyne Hester. Nancy’s voice is an absolute treasure. Another classic cover of hers is “Well, All Right” from a very good Holly compilation project from the late 90s, I believe.
Never seen her live but instead on many You Tube vids. Well loved and respected and is a major loss for the music scene. Tremendous talent.

to my ear she always stayed pretty true to her folk roots, although Outbound Plane became a bit for Suzy Bogguss.

She often performed Tecumseh Valley with Townes and Speed of the Sound of Loneliness with Prine.

One of the few benefits I gained from my first wife was learning about Nanci Griffith. I got nostalgic today thinking about being 25 again, laying on a couch on a Sunday afternoon and listening to Griffith on NPR. It was an easier time in life.
