RIP. Maury Allen

Just heard this, don't have a link. Maury had been around NY since the '60s, working most notably for the Post. Wrote a lot of books, too. He'd been quite ill for some time.

Another of the colorful characters of the New York sports scene leaves us.
The man could write a game sotry or even an "overnight" book faster than anyone I ever saw.

RIP to a true old school baseball guy.

I remember sitting next to Maury in the press box at Port St. Lucie in the first year or two that the Mets held spring training there. So it must have been late '80s. In course of conversation, he said to me, "There's no reason any sportswriter shouldn't be able to make $100,000 a year."

I knew then he was used to New York wages and I ... was not.

r.i.p. to one of the original "chipmunks," i believe. that was the nicknamed pinned on a group of "new-age" n.y. baseball writers in the '60s who were teased by the vets for digging around for any little morsel of news/gossip they could uncover. the fact that several had overbites -- like maury, vic ziegel and phil pepe, among others --just added to the mental picture.

as a devoted post reader in the '60s, i must admit maury was not among the more highly regarded by moi. but it's always sad to hear a part of my youth leaving us. best, maury. enjoy a cold one with casey stengel and your chipmunk buds, most recently vic...
