Former batting champion and the second of the three Alou brothers to reach the major leagues. Brother of Felipe and Jesus, uncle of Moises:

He was on third base when Willie McCovey lined out to Bobby Richardson to end the 1962 World Series. Had a bunt single to lead off the ninth, and then had to stop at third when right fielder Roger Maris made a great play on Willie Mays' opposite-field double with two outs.

Back in the day, quite a slap hitter who made a career out of contact. Sort of the Ichiro of his day. Alou brothers started together in the outfield, made history.

Really found his stride with the Pirates. But, dammit, I keep thinking of the story about the Alou brothers and sisters that didn't play baseball ...

There has always been doubt whether he "had to" stop at third, and a belief that if it had been Mays on first and Alou hitting the double, it would have been a tie score or at least a play at the plate.

I've heard Mays in a couple of interviews say he would have run through the stop sign at third and try to score.

And he would have been thrown out at the plate by about 20 feet. In video I've seen, Richardson is just receiving the cutoff throw when Alou rounds third. Maris is not a Hall of Famer, but he was an outstanding right fielder with a gun for an arm and he made a spectacular play to cut the ball off and get the relay in so Alou had to be held at third.

Canb't remember who was the Giants' third-base coach. Whitey Lockman?
