Don't have a link yet, but I'm told reliably that Calvert DeForest died last night at 85. He was the actor who portrayed Larry "Bud" Melman, a comic foil on the early days of "Late Night with David Letterman."

Re: RIP, Larry \\\"Bud\\\" Melman

I always thought he would make a good Roy Orbison, and someone at Late Night apparently agreed and put him in costume. Good stuff.

RIP, Calvert.

Funny that when Dave switched to CBS, he was forced to leave the Larry Bud Melman persona behind as "intellectual property" of NBC.

Damn. One of the few signed 8X10s I have. Can't remember how I ended up with it, but i got a personalized pic in the mail from him about 10 years ago.

RIP, Bud.

I will eat some toast on a stick in his honor tonight.

But remember that he was the first thing on the CBS side?
They had a huge CBS eye, revealed the pupil, there he was, and yelled "THIS IS CBS!"

Meanwhile:

David Letterman has come down with a stomach virus and won't host "The Late Show" tonight, so Adam Sandler will take his place, TMZ has learned. Sources tell TMZ that Letterman came into the office today, but didn't feel up to hosting. It was the last scheduled taping for the week, so Dave thought it best to get the extra rest.

Sandler's guests will be his "Reign Over Me" co-star Don Cheadle, comedian Todd Barry, race car driver Danica Patrick and singer Lucinda Williams.

Dave, who has only been off the job twice -- for heart surgery and a case of the shingles -- is expected back on Monday.

Just an FYI, I haven't been able to find confirmation either. Neither of his names (Deforest, Bud Melman) show up in Google news.

Those old NBC shows were outstanding. I wish there were reruns somewhere.

That guy always cracked me up. I was a big fan, and none of my friends knew who he was.

I'm watching the show right now and Sandler's having a rough go at it. Thankfully he's taking it in stride though. "I really suck at this. I'm sorry."

Dude is so right. Sandler was not built for this duty. Rather pathetic to see Danica Patrick trying to help him through it.

And RIP to Mr. Larry.

Good. That means I'm still in the running for the co-host job.

My condolences go out to his son, Larry "Chip" Melman

DeForest always cracked me up. I remember when Dave sent him on the North American Goodwill Tour in a motorhome and he got homesick about halfway through.

RIP

I remember a few years ago on a Letterman anniversary show, he did a tribute to Larry. He talked about how Larry had died in the last year and how much everyone missed him. They showed a bunch of clips of Larry's greatest moments, and I was thinking, I don't remember him dying. As Letterman wrapped up the memorial, Larry comes out and says something like, "I'm not dead you jackass."

I laughed my ass off.

Holy ****. I don't think I've seen that since it first aired. My god, that was ****ing hilarious.

I remember hearing that Larry Bud's day job was a drug counselor, and that he kept it for a while after he started appearing on Letterman, but that he had to be transferred out of the job because down-on-their-luck people weren't exactly thinking their life was going in the right direction by having Larry "Bud" Melman helping with their rehab.
