He was Wiley Coyote to JR's Road Runner. I imagine every actor seems themselves as a Brando or a Streep and being a supporting actor on a middle-brow TV show isn't what drew them to it - but I also figure for those lucky to get on a long-lasting show it is a gold mine between the pay and the residuals (particularly when it was a residuals era three-broadcast network landscape (a fairly narrow window of only about 15 years). The cast of Friends and Big Bang Theory never have to work a job for the money ever again and most were/are still not yet 40.

Cliff did manage to get the upper hand on JR a couple of times. But because his character was so cartoonishly obsessed about it, he was gullible for whatever revenge JR set him up for.

Many times! Cliff also ended up as acting President of the United States in the finale for the original show, when they showed what life would have been like had J.R. never been born. Cliff was VP when the President had a stroke (I believe). That made me laugh.
