RIP John Feinstein

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

This is a great thread by Steinberg.

It has been a long time since I read a Season on the Brink was that Feinstein largely kept himself out of the story. The reason may have been it was an early literary work before he had become a superstar and he was more heavily edited.

Wow, what a loss. I don’t even like golf and read A Good Walk Spoiled twice. His autobiography was really interesting. Wonder how his book on Black activism in sports is

RIP to a giant.

I'm guessing he was working on at least one book at the time of his death. Curious as to the topic.

I found that a bit weird too. I know it's the PTI format, everything short, but still. Maybe if Kornheiser was there it would have been more.

Certainly seemed from that clip that Wilbon respected him immensely, but the two were not friends.
Wasn’t much of a tribute.
Anyone who knew John has a story of where he was less than diplomatic to them. But we also know the times he helped or cared far outnumbered the former.

John was someone I knew personally from covering the same sports events from time to time. I found him splendid company and liked him immensely. But I could also imagine that if I were a c0-worker at the same publication, I might find him trying from time to time.

John fell out of favor with Golf Channel because he wouldn’t bow down to the PGA Tour party line. I kind of thought he went overboard sometimes but that’s him and he didn’t care and I respected him more. He was one of those guys who not only thought the four majors were not to be usurped or watered down by The Players but seemed to resent the notion that The Players should be in the same conversation (after 51 years I think it can).
My favorite John moment remains when he was interviewed at halftime of a CBS college basketball telecast after Season on the Brink came out and the interviewer (forgot who he was) asked: “Coach Knight has called you a pimp and a *****. How do. You respond?”
John: “I wish he’d make up his mind so I know how to dress.”
